Frogs have been stolen, an earthquake rumbles, a village is in peril. To restore calm to her land, a girl must delve beneath the surface of a lake, deep into a spirit world. What she finds will thrill readers and introduce them to a classic hero’s journey
Frog Girl is an incredibly deep and complicated story, told in a very simple way. First off, our main character is a strong Native American girl who literally saves the frog people from certain disaster. Any act can change the future in a dramatic way for the good and the bad. We must make the best of choices in order to protect the future, and those who mean the most to us. This book is also a sister book to another by Owen Paul Lewis called Storm Boy, which we have also used in the Bellevue Summer School Program.
Long before saving the earth became a global concern, Dr. Seuss, speaking through his character the Lorax, warned against mindless progress and the danger it posed to the earth’s natural beauty.
There is a hero inside of everyone of us. Superheroes are those that look past the present and into the future. We all have “Great Responsibility” to protect those around us… Including the Earth! This book is a strong example showing the reader that we are all superheroes, and only need to look inside ourselves to let it shine.
Thunder Boy Jr. is named after his dad, but he wants a name that’s all his own. Just because people call his dad Big Thunder doesn’t mean he wants to be Little Thunder. He wants a name that celebrates something cool he’s done, like Touch the Clouds, Not Afraid of Ten Thousand Teeth, or Full of Wonder.
But just when Thunder Boy Jr. thinks all hope is lost, he and his dad pick the perfect name…a name that is sure to light up the sky.
This is an amazing superhero book because we start with our names. Every superhero needs the perfect name!
What is it that you are best at?
What would your superhero name be?
Every day we have the opportunity to become a superhero and to come up with a brand new name… Let us all be Super Songwriters! Your teachers will call themselves Inspiration Spectacular!
Meet Mr. Particular—the world’s choosiest champion! This superhero’s super picky: he says NO to squishy mud, gross green things, tucked-in shirts, humming, and anything with coconut. But, when his friends in the “Super-Duper Group” finally get fed up with his fussiness, can Mr. Particular prove that even the super-squeamish can save the day? This fun comic-book-style story will delight even the most finicky kids!
This book has so many incredible Superhero kids inside the story! We love a wide variety of superheroes. And not only do we get to see this awesome story unfold, but we get to see the main character overcome some very tough situations… for him. Since he is so darned particular.
We all need to remember to overcome our fears, obstacles and annoyances when the need arises.
“Get ready for another super-powered summer with the STYLE crew, we’re ready to knock your socks off! In fact, I’ll be doing something quite different this year with my tunes inspired by Mr. Particular. I’ll be using a sampler to create sounds instead of my guitar. It’s a unique sampler called the KP3, or the Korg Kaoss pad. You are in store for a treat, can’t wait to make some music with you! See you soon.”

Hello, Bellevue! I am glad to have the opportunity to spend my third summer in a row working with you and STYLE. Thunder Boy Jr.is a book from one of my favorite authors and one of my favorite illustrators – double-whammy! – and it tells a fun story, too. I look forward to sharing it with you and working together to create some superhero music!

I am excited to be returning with STYLE this summer in Bellevue. I sing in a band with STYLE co creator, Mr. B, and love participating in STYLE’s sister company, The Bushwick Book Club. I am a professional singer and music instructor, an animal and travel lover, slightly superstitious, and only a little afraid of spiders.

I am super excited to work with you all again this summer and looks forward to all of your creative ideas you have in store for the book Frog Girl. We are certainly going to write an epic song while learning how to interpret a book into song.
